'Midnight Tape' is an ode to imperfection, blending analog grit with intimate live session
“You can hear the city breathing between takes.”
'Midnight Tape' was born in late August—sweaty, humming with life—and so is its sound. Vocalist Jason Hill approached Soultrane with voice memo demos and a desire for something raw but immersive.
The entire project was tracked to 1/4" tape over four evenings in Soultrane's Brooklyn studio, with Marcus Lee and Nina Vega jamming in a tight rhythm section. It’s an unfiltered document of vulnerability, crackling with warmth.
Soultrane’s production kept things live and loose, emphasizing feeling over precision. Mic bleed, room noise, and even passing sirens were left in, creating a textured portrait of place. The EP balances lo-fi sensibility with a high-touch sense of curation—live takes edited subtly, arrangements guided but not forced.
The result feels like stepping into a private session where emotions are caught as they happen. 'Midnight Tape' lives at the crossroads of soul, indie, and cassette culture.
