Soultrane captures real-time dialogue between drums, strings, and silence in this stripped-down session.

Low Flying Aircraft Trio entered Soultrane’s Brooklyn studio at dusk and left just after midnight, having recorded their entire debut in one live take session. The trio—Tomás Vega on drums, Ian Kim on guitar, and Malcolm Rhodes on upright bass—rejected rehearsals and click tracks, opting instead for feel, intuition, and risk. Soultrane embraced the challenge, setting up a minimalist mic array designed to highlight space as much as sound. The drums bleed into the bass mic, the guitar amp hums faintly beneath the snare. Every creak, breath, and shift in weight is preserved.

“You don’t mix this kind of record—you listen for what to leave alone.”

The goal was not perfection, but presence. Each song is a conversation—at times urgent, at times spacious, always alive. In post, Soultrane made few adjustments, letting the room’s natural reflections shape the mix.

The result is a record that lives and breathes in the moment it was made. It’s modern jazz in its most honest form: responsive, imperfect, and impossible to recreate.
