“We weren’t just recording music—we were recording decisions in real time.”
Elijah Mars brought his modern jazz quartet to Soultrane’s studio seeking not polish, but presence. ‘Brass Code’ was tracked completely live, without overdubs, in a two-day session that emphasized performance over perfection.
Using a hybrid chain of vintage Neumann and Coles mics through analog gear, Soultrane created an atmosphere that allowed space to become part of the sound. There was no click track. No headphones. Just musicians in a room with tape rolling.
The record plays like a conversation in motion—Corey Mendes’ piano chasing Elijah’s tone, Lila Chambers’ bass pulling forward, and Theo Cruz stretching time.
Soultrane’s mix is subtle but powerful, emphasizing dynamics and room tone, preserving the air between phrases. It's a reminder of jazz’s emotional immediacy, made even more potent by a production approach that stays entirely out of its way.
